About
Manchester United: Betting background information
Manchester United Football Club is perhaps the best known and
supported English football club, based at Old Trafford stadium
in Trafford, Greater Manchester. One of the most successful football
clubs in English football history, the Red Devils have won the
FA Premier League/Football League Trophy, the FA Cup, the League
Cup, the European Cup, the UEFA Cup Winners Cup, the Intercontinental
Cup and the European Super Cup. Man Utd's popularity is unparallelled,
and the club boasts the highest average attendance in English
football season after season.
Formed as Newton Heath F.C. in 1878 (afer the works team of the
Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway depot of the same name), the
club was close to bankruptcy in 1902, when it was taken over by
J H Davies who changed its name to Manchester United.
During World War II, Old Trafford was bombed, and Man Utd were
allowed to play at neighbouring Manchester City at the Maine Road
ground. The appointment of Sir Matt Busby as manager following
the war was a great decision, and great success ensued. Man Utd
won the Football League in 1956 and again in 1957, but in 1958
the football world was shocked by the Munich air disaster, which
took the lives of eight Manchester Utd players. This was the lowest
point in the club's history, yet it held firm and continued to
rebuild a remarkable history and tradition, again winning the
football league trophy in 1965 and 1967, and then onto the European
Cup in 1968.
Man Utd teams have had some excellent players, including the likes
of Best, Van Nistelrooy Cantona and Giggs to name a few. It is
safe to say that with United being the most successful team in
the Premiership's history, they are one of the safest bets when
in comes to putting down your cash.
