About UK Football: Betting background information

The UK has some of the most famous football teams in the world, and is watched throughout the globe because of it's intensity and the high skill levels of the players. Well known clubs such as Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur often meet in classic encounters.

The football season runs from August to May, with teams receiving three points for a win and one point each for a draw. Any teams with the same number of points are then ordered by goal difference, then goals scored and finally head-to-head records.

English Football

The English game is spearheaded by the Premier League, formed in 1992 to replace the old English First Division, which quickly evolved into arguably the world's most popular football league. With 20 clubs in annual contention for the Premiership, it is the top division and it's competitiveness and high wages attracts footballers from all parts of the globe. Manchester United were the first club to hold the FA Premiership League Trophy aloft, and under the management of legendary manager Alex Ferguson enjoyed much success in following seasons.

Leagues ranked below the Premier League are the Championship, League One, League Two, Conference, Conference North and Conference South.

At the end of each season, the three clubs at the bottom of the Premier League table are relegated into the Championship. Three Championship clubs are in turn promoted into the Premier League, the top two placed teams automatically and the third to sixth placed teams play off for the final promotion place, often making for enthralling ends to the Championship season.

Apart from the leagues, English football also has the Football Association Cup (FA Cup), League Cup and Charity Shield which punters will also be able to place bets on.

Scottish Football

In Scotland, the top competition is the Scottish Premier League (SPL), followed by Scottish Division One, Two, Three and the Highland League. The famous Glasgow-based Celtic and Rangers often trade blows at the top of the SPL table and Cup competitions.

Other UK Football leagues

Welsh Football and Irish Premier Leagues also exist, however punters are less likely to find quoted betting odds for these competitions. Paddy Power does provide odds on the Irish Premier League (see list above).
